User Researcher (San Mateo, CA) 

The PlayStation Studios User Research Team is looking for a User Researcher to conduct player research in collaboration with development studios in the interest of creating exceptional player experiences. The successful candidate will join our research team based in San Mateo, CA (on-site or remotely) to work on PlayStation-exclusive games.  

The User Researcher is an independent, intermediate-level individual contributor responsible for developing study plans, conducting high-quality research, and reporting research insights to improve our games.  


  • Gather, verify, and define study requirements and drive authoring of research plans, scripts, surveys, and study goals.  

  • Ensure that specific study research questions are well-defined and capable of adding value to a product. 

  • Work constructively with Studio team members / Sony Interactive Entertainment Producers to set clear expectations for the output of a given study. 

  • Define study datasets and ensure quality analysis. 

  • Schedule & coordinate upcoming study roadmap for a given product in partnership with senior researchers. 

  • Provide structure for reporting and ensure insights are communicated to senior researchers, Studio teams, and SIE producers in an organized, actionable manner in both verbal and written form. 

  • Use knowledge of game design to derive actionable insights from research data while proactively considering interactions, dependencies, and interoperability with other feature areas.  

  • Effectively explain complex player issues and research findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  

  • Drive product improvement at the feature level. 

  • Anticipate study requirements & risks and proactively define solutions.  

  • Coach / mentor Associate researchers on research execution. 

  • Make iterative improvements to existing ways of working and innovate new processes, workflows, metrics, and planning at the study level.   

  • Effectively engage with Studio stakeholders and maintain the relationships built by senior team members. 


This opportunity would suit a self-motivated individual with a usability, user centered design, or human-computer interaction research background. The ideal candidate will have a postgraduate degree in an analytic field that focuses on people and/or product development such as Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Human Factors.   

  • Strongly committed to quality, organized, analytical, methodical, and interested in improving player experiences through user research. 

  • Demonstrated skill with a broad variety of user research methods, including but not limited to expert review, usability testing, playtesting, survey design, text & verbal analysis, and observational fieldwork.  

  • Proven competency with descriptive and analytical statistical techniques/tools such as telemetry, SPSS, R, regression and ANOVA. 

  • Capable of contributing to multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and exciting environment. 

  • Strong verbal, numerical and written communication skills. 

  • Able to identify and discuss the merits of a variety of basic methodologies.  

  • Basic knowledge of game design & product development. 

  • Growth mindset, proactive seeker of opportunities for increased depth of expertise and scope of ownership. 

  • Passionate interest in video games across a wide variety of genres with an innate curiosity for understanding player motivations and behaviors.   

Required Experience/Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, HCI, Human Factors Engineering, or related field. 

  • 2 years’ practical experience developing study designs, testing, analyzing, reporting, and presenting findings in video games or an equivalent field. 

Preferred Experience/Education 

  • Postgraduate degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, HCI, Human Factors Engineering, or related field. 

  • 3 years’ practical experience developing study designs, testing, analyzing, reporting, and presenting findings in video games or an equivalent field.
