The Technical Artist role at PlayStation involves bridging the gap between the creative and engineering teams in game development. The role of the Technical Artist is to bridge the gap between the issues of the creative and engineer teams in game development. They make the work of the artists easier by possessing an equal amount of knowledge about both disciplines to ensure all needs are being met. They develop the game engine so it works as well as possible for the team. Tech artists also ensure the art content and features are easily integrated into the game, while respecting the artistic vision and technical constraints of the project.


 

Essential Functions

  • Develop powerful and efficient workflows for the Art team

  • Create new techniques and procedures to improve game asset quality

  • Help improve and refine shader, texture, lighting quality

  • Research and help develop new technologies 

  • Identify and fix pipeline issues

  • Analyze and improve art asset inefficiencies to optimize console performance 

  • Support the Art team

  • Act as a liaison between Engineering and the Art departments

  • Assist with solving daily production challenges


 

 Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years' video game development experience

  • Complete understanding of game workflows and pipelines

  • Experience working with multiple game engines

  • Knowledge of Maya, Houdini, and other standard DCC software packages

  • Maya scripting experience in Python and MEL

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in the games industry with at least one shipped title (excluding academic projects)

  • A portfolio reflecting high-quality game art, scripted tools, and shaders

  • Shader authoring skills (HLSL, GLSL, CGFX) knowledge

  • C++, C#, Javascript, or other programming knowledge

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. 

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

This is a flexible role that can be remote, with varying pay ranges based on geographic location. For example, if you are based out of Seattle, the estimated base pay range for this role is listed below.
$98,200—$147,400 USD
