Senior Software Engineer - Game Services

We're looking for a Senior Game Server Engineer to join our team at Hypixel Studios, which collaborates remotely from around the world. Our members range from industry newcomers to experts with 25+ years of experience. Team members come from a diverse set of backgrounds, but share a common passion for building polished player-focused, community-powered games.

As a Senior Game Server Engineer on our Services and Platform team, you will design, prototype, and implement the services that deliver Hytale’s online Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) offering. These services implement our “around the game” features and help to scale and manage our game servers in a cloud-native environment. You will also use your knowledge and experience to coach and mentor other services engineers to apply their skills to the unique engineering challenges of online games.

Who you are:

• You have experience with and a passion for backend systems that power online Games-as-a-Service products
• You have strong fundamental programming skills and can build robust, highly configurable, data-driven systems
• You are team-oriented, self-motivated, and autonomous
• You know and care how your code affects performance, memory usage, and response times
• You enjoy collaboration and mentoring other engineers

Some of your role:

• Design, prototype, implement, and maintain game services in high quality Java code
• Architect, load test, profile, analyze, and optimize systems for high scalability
• Mentor other engineers to increase their capabilities and productivity
• Use DevOps and SRE principles to maintain high system uptime

Essential Traits:

• 6+ years of experience building highly scalable online systems
• 4+ years of programming in Java, C#, or other compiled, garbage-collected language
• 4+ years experience with Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) architectures
• Proficiency with both SQL and NoSQL persistence solutions
• Proficient at communicating with both technical and non-technical individuals

Bonus Traits:

• Experience with voxel world games and/or survival games
• Automated testing including Unit Testing, Integration Testing, and Load Testing
• Experience building and deploying cloud-native systems on AWS, Azure, or GCP
• C++ Proficiency for Game Server integrations
• Git Proficiency
