We are Timbre Games (part of the Sumo Digital Group), a new studio in Vancouver, Canada focused on making exciting, innovative game experiences. Timbre’s vision is to change the games industry through the original games we make, as well as how we make them. We are utilizing advanced tools and technologies to shape our vision of building diverse and accessible AAA games.

The Senior Materials Artist at Timbre will play a critical role in defining the stylized, detailed look of Timbre’s games. As our first material artist hire, they will be instrumental in establishing the pipelines, workflows, and relationships with the art team that will establish Timbre’s visual style, highlighting the creativity and uniqueness we strive for.

As a Senior Materials Artist at Timbre, you will:

    • Create and implement high-quality materials and textures for game assets, including characters, environments, and props
    • Define the material visual style for the project by working closely with the Environment and Lighting team, identifying what is needed, and building a library to achieve quality looks
    • Collaborate with the Art and Design teams to understand the artistic vision and technical requirements of the project
    • Utilize your artistic skills and technical knowledge to design visually appealing and realistic materials that enhance the overall game experience
    • Optimize materials and textures for performance and memory constraints without compromising visual fidelity
    • Communicate and collaborate with cross-functional teams and embrace feedback
    • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, tools, and techniques related to material creation, and provide input on improving workflows and pipelines
    • Actively participate in team meetings, critiques, and brainstorming sessions to contribute ideas and solutions for artistic challenges

What you bring:

    • 5+ years of experience in the Art, preferably in video games
    • Strong portfolio showcasing your proficiency in creating high-quality materials and textures for games
    • Solid understanding of material creation workflows and industry-standard software such as Substance Painter, Substance Designer, or equivalent
    • Proficient in creating and optimizing materials within game engines (e.g. Unreal Engine, Maya)
    • Knowledge of PBR (Physically Based Rendering) principles and experience in creating realistic and stylized materials
    • Excellent artistic and technical skills with an eye for detail and a strong sense of aesthetics
